I loved that camp
"I love the wild not less than the good." -Thoreau-
I grew up a city kid in Irvington, NJ. When I was 11 years old I saw a cow for the first time as I sat on the bus traveling to The Irvington Outdoor Education Center. In those days The Irvington School District brought groups of sixth graders to camp for a week in the country. I can trace the influence that that week had on me to this day...
I remember dragging my suit case up the hill toward the dorms, and the cafeteria where it was my job to "pearl dive" after dinner. I remember the smell of the pine forest, seeing an ant war, and cooking a stew around my first campfire. I saw shooting stars, and a frog jump up the pant leg of my friend John Koza when we were down at the pond at night...
I loved that camp. I worked there during high school and college, teaching "Outpost Camping" to younger city kid campers that arrived every year. It felt right being outside. I learned a lot there, and the kids did too. To this day I often go to outdoor environments because I still learn a lot there.
Great lessons are revealed in the woods, the mountains, and the natural environments. I often find direction and inspiration when I am in them. The Pendo Learning Expeditions that I have created are designed to provide the same for young people that I teach. The courses compliment their educations in school, broaden their vision, and provide experiences to reflect upon for their lifetimes.
